Refutation of All Heresies 9.12.16
Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.
Summary: Callistus devised a new teaching: the Word is the Son, and the same is called Father, one indivisible Spirit.
English · Claude translation
Having the poison lodged in his heart, and thinking nothing straightforwardly, and at the same time ashamed to speak the truth, because he had said to us publicly by way of reproach, “You are ditheists,” and also because he was often accused by Sabellius of having transgressed the first faith, he invented a heresy of this kind, saying that the Word himself is Son and that he himself is also Father, being called so by name, but being one indivisible Spirit;
