Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: Essenes pray and sing hymns before speaking at dawn, then work until the fifth hour.

Παραμένουσι δὲ εὐτάκτως καὶ ἐπιμόνως εὐχόμενοι ἕωθεν, μηδὲν πρότερον φθεγξάμενοι εἰ μὴ τὸν θεὸν ὑμνήσωσι· καὶ οὕτω προελθόντες ἕκαστοι ἐφʼ ὃ βούλονται πράττουσι, καὶ ἕως ὥρας πέμπτης πράξαντες ἐπανίασιν.

They persevere in good order and constancy, praying from dawn, uttering no word before they have sung hymns to God; and so going out each to what he wishes, they work, and having worked until the fifth hour, they return.
