Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: They change out of their sacred linen and return to work until the evening meal.

Ἔπειτα τὰς ἐσθῆτας, ἃς ἔνδον συνεστιώμενοι ἀμφιέννυνται, ἀποθέμενοι ὡς ἱεράς, εἰσὶ δὲ λιναῖ, τὰς ἐν τῇ προόδῳ πάλιν ἀναλαμβάνοντες ἐπὶ τὰ φίλα ἔργα ὁρμῶσιν ἕως δείλης. Δειπνοῦσι δὲ ὁμοίως τοῖς προειρημένοις πάντα ποιήσαντες.

Then, laying aside as sacred the garments they wear while dining together inside (they are linen), and taking up again those they wore going out, they hurry to their beloved work until evening. And they dine in the same way, doing everything as described.
