Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: Jewish worship offered first fruits to God with order and reverence; the Sadducees deny angels and spirits.

Ἱερουργικὴ δὲ λειτουργία ἄκρως ἐξήσκητο παρʼ αὐτοῖς εὐσχημόνως πρὸς τὸ θεῖον προσφερομένη, καθὼς τοῖς βουλομένοις ῥᾴδιόν ἐστιν ἐντυχοῦσι τῇ περὶ τούτων ἐξαγορευούσῃ βίβλῳ μαθεῖν, ὡς σεμνῶς καὶ ὁσίως τῷ θεῷ ἀπαρχόμενοι τῶν παρʼ αὐτοῦ δεδωρημένων εἰς χρῆσιν καὶ ἀπόλαυσιν ἀνθρώπων, κελευόμενοι εὐτάκτως καὶ παραμόνως ἐλειτούργουν. Τούτων δέ τινα οἱ Σαδδουκαῖοι ἀπαγορεύουσιν· οὐ γὰρ βούλονται ἀγγέλους ἢ πνεύματα ὑπάρχειν.

The liturgical service was practiced among them in the highest degree, offered becomingly to the divine, as those who wish can easily learn by reading the book that declares these things: how, reverently and holily offering to God the first fruits of what he had given for people's use and enjoyment, they served as commanded, in good order and steadfastly. Some of these things the Sadducees reject; for they do not wish there to be angels or spirits.
