Against Celsus 8.16

Then, I think, again confusing matters, he brings from another heresy the words, “How is it that many are around the well and no one goes into the well?” and “Why, having travelled so long a road, are you without courage? You are mistaken,” and “For I have courage and a sword”; none of which we, who belong to the church named after Christ alone, say is true. Having said this, he thinks he is saying things consistent with himself which have nothing to do with us. For our aim is not to worship some god on a hypothesis, but the Creator of this universe and of anything else there may be that is not sensible or shown. Those who walk “another way” and “other paths,” who deny him and have given themselves to a novel fiction and a mere name of a god as though greater than the Creator, will know, and whoever it may be who says that the Son is mightier than and lord “of the God who rules.” We have given the explanation that seems right to us of why one must not “serve two masters,” when we showed that no sedition concerning Jesus the Lord can be proved among those who confess that they have risen above every lord and serve only the Lord, the Son of God, the Word of God.
