Chapter 1

When, by the grace of God and the common prayers of you all, we have finished the contest set before us and have attained the prizes of the upward call, then we wish this decision of ours also to stand: that our remains be brought back by the presbyter, our father Proidus, and our brothers Crispinus and Gordius with the zealous people, and by Cyril and Mark and Sapricius son of Ammonius, so that our remains may be laid to rest below the city of Zela, in the village of Sarein. For although we all come from different villages, we have chosen one and the same burial place for our rest. Since we undertook the contest of the struggle in common, we have also agreed to make our rest in common in the aforesaid village. This, then, seemed good to the Holy Spirit and pleased us. [2] For this reason we, Aetius and Eutychius and the rest of our brothers in Christ, urge our lords, our parents and brothers, to be free of all grief and distress, to honor the bond of brotherly fellowship, and to help zealously to carry out our wish, so that you may receive from our common Father the great reward of obedience and sympathy. [3] Further, we ask everyone that no one keep for himself any of our remains taken up from the furnace, but that he take care to gather them together and hand them over to those named above, so that, having shown the strength of his zeal and the integrity of his goodwill, he may receive the gain of sympathy for these very labors—just as Mary, who kept watch at the tomb of Christ and saw the Lord before all others, was the first to receive the grace of joy and blessing. [4] If anyone opposes our wish, let him be a stranger to the divine gain and liable for every disobedience, having lost what is right for the sake of a petty wish of his own, forcing, as far as lies in him, to cut apart from one another those whom our holy Savior, by his own grace and providence, yoked together in the faith. [5] And if the boy Eunoicus too, at the nod of the God who loves humanity, comes to the same end of the contest, he has asked to have the same resting place with us. But if he is kept unharmed by the grace of the Lord and is still tried in the world, we charge him to devote himself freely to our martyr-shrine, and we urge him to keep the commandments of Christ, so that on the great day of the resurrection he may share in the enjoyment with us, since even while in the world he endured the same afflictions as we. [6] For goodwill toward a brother looks to the righteousness of God, but disobedience toward one's kin tramples on God's commandment. For it is written, “He who loves injustice hates his own soul.”

Chapter 2

2Gebhardt, 168

Therefore I ask you, brother Crispinus *, and I charge you, to become strangers to all worldly pleasure and error. For the glory of the world is slippery and feeble: it blooms for a little while and withers again like grass, receiving its end more quickly than its beginning. Rather, be willing to run to the God who loves humanity, who gives unfailing wealth to those who run to him and awards eternal life to those who believe in him. [2] This is the fitting time for those who wish to be saved, offering an ample period for repentance and leaving no excuse in the practice of a godly life, for those who put nothing off to the future. For the change of life cannot be foreseen. But if you have recognized it, look to what is profitable and in this time show the purity of your devotion, so that, being found in it, you may wipe out the record of your earlier sins. For “In whatever I find you,” he says, “in that I will also judge you.” [3] Be eager, then, to be found blameless in the commandments of Christ, so that you may escape the sleepless and eternal fire. For that the time is short, the divine voice cried long ago. [4] Above all, then, honor love; for it alone honors what is right, obeying God by the law of brotherly love. For through the brother who is seen, the unseen God is honored. The word is addressed to brothers born of the same mother, but the intent is for all who love Christ. For our holy Savior and God said that those are brothers who share with one another not by nature, but are joined by excellent conduct in faith and fulfill the will of our Father who is in heaven.
