About this work

Author
Eutherius of Tyana
Attribution
disputed · Printed by Migne among the Dubia of Athanasius (PG 28:1337-1393, Montfaucon's text from a Vatican manuscript), under the title Confutationes quarumdam propositionum. Modern scholars (Marcel Richard, Jean Lebon and others) assign it to Eutherius of Tyana, an Antiochene opponent of Cyril of Alexandria; the attribution is probable but not certain. Not a work of Athanasius.
Standing
Not honoured as a saint or in a church calendar by the Catholic, Orthodox, or Protestant traditions. Writer in the church of his time (metropolitan of Cappadocia II, in communion with the Eastern bishops), not venerated by any of the three traditions.
Date
ca. 431-440 (disputed) · Written against Christological formulas of the Cyrillian party (one nature of Christ, God the Word suffered impassibly, etc.); the date depends on the attribution to Eutherius, who is attested between 431 and his exile in 435, and who died before 440.
