of the braid. Adding other people's hair must be utterly rejected; putting on the head someone else's locks, clothing the skull in dead tresses, is most godless. For on whom will the presbyter lay his hand? Whom will he bless? Not the woman who is adorned, but the other person's hair, and through it another head. And if “the head of the woman is the man, and the head of the man is Christ,” how is it not godless for them to fall into a double sin? They deceive the men, their husbands, by substituting hair; and, as far as in them lies, they shame the Lord by adorning themselves like courtesans to deceive the truth, blaspheming the truly beautiful head. Nor, then, should hair be dyed, nor gray hair colored; for neither is it permitted to make clothing varicolored. Above all, the venerable and trustworthy mark of age should not be covered, but the honor from God displayed in the light for the reverence of the young; for sometimes the appearance of gray hair, standing over the shameless like an instructor, has turned them toward self-control and startled the youthfulness of their desire by the brightness of its look.
