[7] … through your only-begotten Son; and him you begot before all ages, by will and power and goodness, without intermediary, “the only-begotten Son, God the Word,” living Wisdom, “the firstborn of all creation, the angel of your great counsel,” your high priest, but King and Lord of every intelligible and sensible nature, “who is before all things, through whom are all things.” [8] For you, eternal God, made all things through him, and through him you count the universe worthy of fitting providence; for through whom you granted being, through him you also gave well-being: God and Father of your only-begotten Son, who through him made before all things the Cherubim and the Seraphim, ages and hosts, powers and “authorities, principalities and thrones,” archangels and angels, and after all these made through him this visible world and all that is in it. [9] For you are he who “set up the heaven like a vault” and “stretched it out like a skin,” and “founded the earth upon nothing” by your will alone; who fixed the firmament and fashioned night and day; who brought light out of the treasuries and, by its withdrawal, brought on darkness for the rest of the living things that move in the world; who appointed the sun in heaven “to rule the day” and the moon “to rule the night,” and inscribed the chorus of stars in heaven for the praise of your magnificence; [10] who made water for drinking and cleansing, life-giving air for breathing in and out and for the utterance of the voice by the tongue striking the air, and hearing assisted by it, so as to perceive the speech that falls upon it; [11] who made fire for the comfort of darkness, for the supply of need, and so that we might be warmed and lighted by it; [12] who separated the great sea from the land, and made the one navigable and the other passable on foot, and filled the one “with living things small and great” and the other with tame and wild ones, and crowned it with various plants and garlanded it with herbs and beautified it with flowers and enriched it with seeds; [13] who established the abyss and set a great hollow around it, heaped-up seas of salt waters, and “fenced it in with gates” of finest sand; who sometimes raises it by winds to the height of mountains and sometimes spreads it flat as a plain, sometimes maddens it with storm and sometimes calms it with stillness, so that it may be easy for seafarers to sail; [14] who girded with rivers the world made by you through Christ, and flooded it with torrents, and watered it with ever-flowing springs, and bound it round with mountains as an immovable and most secure seat for the earth. [15] For you filled your world and adorned it with fragrant and healing herbs, with many and various living things, strong and weaker, for food and for work, tame and wild; with the hissing of serpents, the cries of many-colored birds, the cycles of years, the numbers of months and days, the orders of the seasons, the courses of rain-bearing clouds for the bringing forth of fruits and the sustenance of living things, “the balance of the winds” that blow when commanded by you, the multitude of plants and herbs. [16] And not only did you create the world, but you also made man in it, the citizen of the world, showing him forth as the ornament of the world; for you said to your Wisdom, “Let us make man according to our image and according to likeness, and let them rule the fish of the sea and the birds of the heaven.” [17] Therefore you made him of an immortal soul and a dissoluble body, the one out of nothing, the other out of the four elements; and you gave him, as to the soul, rational discernment, the distinguishing of piety and impiety, the observing of the just and unjust; and as to the body you granted him the fivefold sense and the power of moving from place to place. [18] For you, God almighty, through Christ planted a paradise in Eden toward the east, adorned with all kinds of edible plants, and into it, as into a costly home, you brought him; and in making him you gave him an innate law, so that he might have from within and of himself the seeds of the knowledge of God. [19] And having brought him into “the paradise of delight,” you gave him authority to partake of all things, but forbade him to taste of one alone, in the hope of better things, so that, if he kept the commandment, he might receive immortality as its reward. [20] But when he neglected the commandment and tasted the forbidden fruit, through the deceit of the serpent and the counsel of the woman, you justly drove him out of paradise; yet in your goodness you did not overlook him when he was perishing utterly, for he was your workmanship, but, having subjected creation to him, you granted him to provide food for himself by his own sweat and labors, while you make all things grow and increase and ripen; and having laid him to sleep for a little while, you called him by an oath to rebirth; loosing the bond of death you promised life from the resurrection. [21] And not only this, but you also poured out his descendants into a countless multitude; you glorified those who remained with you and punished those who fell away from you; you accepted the sacrifice of Abel as holy, and turned away from the gift of Cain the fratricide as accursed; and besides these you received Seth and Enos and “translated Enoch.” [22] For you are the Creator of men and the giver of life and the filler of need and the giver of laws, the rewarder of those who keep them and the avenger of those who transgress them; who “brought the great flood upon the world” because of the multitude of those who acted impiously, and rescued righteous Noah from the flood in an ark with “eight souls,” the end of those that had passed away and the beginning of those that were to come; who kindled the fearful fire against the Pentapolis of Sodom, and “made a fruitful land a salt waste because of the wickedness of those who dwelt in it,” and snatched holy Lot from the burning. [23] You are he who rescued Abraham from the impiety of his forefathers, and made him heir of the world, and showed him your Christ; who appointed Melchizedek high priest of your worship; who showed forth your much-enduring servant Job as conqueror of the serpent, the prince of evil; who made Isaac the son of the promise, and Jacob the father of twelve sons, and poured out his descendants into a multitude and brought them into Egypt “with seventy-five souls.” [24] You, Lord, did not overlook Joseph, but gave him, as the reward of his chastity for your sake, rule over the Egyptians; you, Lord, did not disregard the Hebrews oppressed by the Egyptians, because of the promises to their fathers, but delivered them, punishing the Egyptians. [25] And when men corrupted the natural law, and sometimes thought creation self-produced, and sometimes honored it more than they ought and ranked it with you, the God of all things, you did not allow them to wander astray, but showing forth your holy servant Moses, through him you gave the written law to help the natural one, and showed that creation is your work, and banished the error of many gods; you glorified Aaron and his descendants with priestly honor; you punished the Hebrews when they sinned and received them when they returned. [26] You punished the Egyptians with ten plagues; dividing the sea, you brought the Israelites through; you destroyed the pursuing Egyptians under the water; you sweetened bitter water with wood; you poured out water from the sheer rock; you rained manna from heaven, and food from the air, the quail; “a pillar of fire by night” for light “and a pillar of cloud by day” for shade from the heat; you showed forth Joshua as general and through him overthrew seven nations of the Canaanites; you “split the Jordan, dried up the rivers of Etham”; you threw down walls without engines or human hand. [27] For all things be glory to you, almighty Master. You are worshiped by countless hosts of angels, archangels, “thrones, dominions, principalities, authorities,” powers, eternal hosts; “the Cherubim and the six-winged Seraphim, with two wings covering their feet, with two their heads, and with two flying,” and saying, together with thousand thousands of archangels and ten thousand times ten thousand angels, crying without ceasing and without silence (and let all the people say with them): “Holy, holy, holy Lord of hosts, heaven and earth are full of his glory; blessed be he forever. Amen.” [28] And let the high priest say next: [29] “For you are truly holy and all-holy, Most High “and highly exalted forever.” [30] Holy too is your only-begotten Son, our Lord and God Jesus the Christ, who, ministering to you, his God and Father, in all things, in varied creation and fitting providence, did not overlook the human race perishing; but after the natural law, after the exhortation of the law, after the prophetic reproofs and the oversight of the angels (when men were corrupting both the positive and the natural law and casting out of memory the flood, the burning, the plagues upon the Egyptians, the slaughters of the Palestinians, and all were about to perish at any moment), he himself was pleased, by your will, he the Creator of man, to become man; the Lawgiver, to be under laws; the High Priest, to be the victim; the Shepherd, to be a sheep. [31] And he propitiated you, his own God and Father, and reconciled you to the world, and freed all from the wrath that lay upon them, being born of a virgin, “God the Word having come to be in flesh, the beloved Son, the firstborn of all creation,” according to the prophecies foretold about him by himself, “of the seed of David” and Abraham, of the tribe of Judah; and he who fashions all who are born came to be in the womb of a virgin, and the fleshless was made flesh, and he who was begotten timelessly was born in time. [32] Having lived in holiness and taught lawfully, having driven away from men “every disease and every sickness,” having done “signs and wonders among the people,” having partaken of food and drink and sleep, he who nourishes all who need food “and fills every living thing with good pleasure,” he “manifested your name” to those who did not know it, drove away ignorance, rekindled piety, fulfilled your will, “finished the work which you gave him.” [33] And having accomplished all these things, he was seized by the hands of the lawless, of falsely named priests and high priests and of a lawless people, through the betrayal of him who was sick with wickedness … [38] … and his death and resurrection from the dead and return into the heavens and his future second coming, in which “he comes with glory and power to judge the living and the dead” “and to render to each according to his works,” we offer you, the King and God, according to his ordinance, this bread and this cup, “giving thanks to you through him” that you have counted us worthy to stand before you and to serve you as priests. [39] And we ask you to look graciously upon these gifts set before you, you God who need nothing, and to be well pleased with them for the honor of your Christ, and to send down your Holy Spirit upon this sacrifice, “the witness of the sufferings of the Lord Jesus,” so that he may show this bread to be the body of your Christ and this cup the blood of your Christ, so that those who partake of it may be confirmed in piety, obtain forgiveness of sins, be delivered from the devil and his deceit, be filled with the Holy Spirit, become worthy of your Christ, and obtain eternal life, you being reconciled to them, almighty Master. [40] We pray you further, Lord, also for your holy church from one end of the earth to the other, “which you purchased with the precious blood” of your Christ, that you may keep it unshaken and free from storms “until the consummation of the age”; and for every episcopate “that rightly divides the word of truth.” [41] We beseech you further also for my nothingness, who offer to you, and for the whole presbytery, for the deacons and all the clergy, that, making them all wise, you may fill them with the Holy Spirit. [42] We further “beseech” you, Lord, “for the king and those in authority” and the whole army, that our affairs may be at peace, so that, spending all the time of our life in quietness and concord, we may glorify you through “Jesus Christ our hope.” [43] We offer to you further also for all the saints who have pleased you from the beginning, patriarchs, prophets, righteous men, apostles, martyrs, confessors, bishops, presbyters, deacons, subdeacons, readers, singers, virgins, widows, laymen, and all whose names you yourself know. [44] We offer to you further for this people, that you may show it forth, to the praise of your Christ, as “a royal priesthood, a holy nation”; for those in virginity and purity; for the widows of the church; for those in honorable marriages and in childbearing; for the infants of your people, that you may make none of us a castaway. [45] We ask you further also for this city and those who dwell in it, for those in sicknesses, for those in bitter slavery, for those in exile, for those whose goods have been confiscated, for those who sail and travel, that you may be the helper of all, the “help and protector” of all. [46] We beseech you further for “those who hate us and persecute us for your name's sake,” for those who are outside and have gone astray, that you may convert them to good and soften their anger. [47] We beseech you further also for the catechumens of the church, and for those vexed by the adversary, and for our brothers in penance, that you may perfect the first in the faith, cleanse the second from the working of the evil one, accept the repentance of the third, and forgive both them and us our transgressions. [48] We offer to you further also for good temperature of the air and fruitfulness of the crops, so that, partaking without lack of the good things that come from you, we may praise you without ceasing, “who give food to all flesh.” [49] We beseech you further also for those who are absent for a good reason, that, keeping us all in piety, you may gather us together in the kingdom of your Christ, the God of every sensible and intelligible nature, our King, steadfast, blameless, irreproachable; [50] for to you be all glory, reverence and thanksgiving, honor and worship, to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, both now and always and to the unfailing and endless ages of ages.” [51] And let all the people say, “Amen.”

Notes and citation

Summary: The anaphora praises God for creation and the history of salvation, joins the angels' Holy, recalls Christ's incarnation and passion, offers the bread and cup, calls down the Holy Spirit, and intercedes for the whole church and world.

  • The scan lost much of this chapter. Only the first word of section 4 (“Having prayed”) and the end of section 7 survive before section 8, and sections 34–38 (from the betrayal through the account of the Last Supper to the beginning of the remembrance) are lost; “…” marks the gaps. Raise us up, O God, in your grace. Having risen, let us commend ourselves to God through his Christ.” [10] And let the bishop say: “O God, great and great of name, ‘great in counsel and mighty in works,’ the God and Father of ‘your holy Servant Jesus’ our Savior: look upon us and upon this your flock, which you chose through him for the glory of your name; and having sanctified our body and soul, count us worthy, ‘made clean from all defilement of flesh and spirit,’ to obtain the good things set before us; and judge none of us unworthy, but be our helper, protector and defender, through your Christ, with whom be glory, honor, praise, doxology and thanksgiving to you and to the Holy Spirit forever. Amen.” [11] And after all have said “Amen,” let the deacon say, “Let us attend.” [12] And let the bishop address the people thus: “Holy things for the holy.” [13] And let the people answer: “One is holy, one is Lord, Jesus Christ, to the glory of God the Father, blessed forever. Amen. ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will among men.’ ‘Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord’; ‘God is the Lord, and he has appeared’ among us; ‘hosanna in the highest.’” [14] And after this let the bishop partake, then the presbyters and the deacons and the subdeacons and the readers and the singers and the ascetics, and among the women the deaconesses and the virgins and the widows, then the children, and then all the people in order, with reverence and devotion, without tumult. [15] And let the bishop give the offering, saying, “The body of Christ”; and let the one who receives say, “Amen.” And let the deacon hold the cup and, giving it, say, “The blood of Christ, the cup of life”; and let the one who drinks say, “Amen.” [16] And let Psalm 33 be said while all the rest are partaking. [17] And when all the men and all the women have partaken, let the deacons take what remains and carry it into the pastophoria.
