I would count myself blessed already, most beloved, since, though we are not sufficient for the virtuous way of life of the holy and earnest who have taken up zeal for God, we are counted worthy to be prompted by these same people ⟨so as⟩ to rouse the mind and to set it to what is useful.

For the lowly mind that is always in us, which is eager to persevere quietly and not to stretch further, looking closely at that saying of the apostle, “that I may not stretch beyond the measure of the rule which God has given us as a measure,” is now compelled to come to this.

For from every side the votes, so to speak, have prevailed: those of the God-given zeal among you and of others of the same faith, I mean those who are zealous for orthodoxy, among them our son Hypatius, who came to me from the land of the Egyptians for this very purpose. They have made me put away all indolence and all hesitation, and no longer keep silent or put in second place writing to you about the faith, since you and our brothers ask about our salvation from the divine and holy Scripture: the firm foundation of the faith concerning Father and Son and Holy Spirit and all the rest of salvation in Christ, I mean the resurrection of the dead and the incarnate coming of the Only-begotten, and concerning the holy covenant, old and new, and in short the other elements that make up complete salvation.

For truly those who hold the orthodox view about the Son of God and the Holy Spirit, and who know how to speak in harmony and agreement with the most blessed apostle Peter, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God,” will clearly be blessed by the Lord himself, just as that holy man was blessed when he heard “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona,” that is, son of Jonah; for his father was called Jonah, and “bar” is translated from the Hebrew language as “son.”

So in saying “the only true God” he led us to the monarchy, so that we may no longer “be enslaved under the elements of the world,” so that there may no longer be polytheism among us, and human thoughts may not be scattered toward such fornication, but toward the unity of the only true God. For “the first fornication is the devising of idols,” says the Scripture.

Summary: Christ's words lead to the one God, away from idolatry, which Scripture calls fornication.

But when he says, “Even if I bear witness about myself, my witness is true,” he shows that his witness is not a man's, but that he is God, speaking truly in his own ⟨truth⟩. So the Father is true God, the Son is true God, the Holy Spirit is true, being “the Spirit of God” and “the Spirit of truth”: a Trinity counted in one name.

For about the Father the Son himself says, “that they may know you, the only true God,” while a trustworthy witness ⟨about the Son⟩ is the one who leaned on his breast and called him Only-begotten. He did not add “true God” to the only-begotten God; but of the Father it is written ⟨that he is⟩ true God, and of the Son, only-begotten God. Conversely, of the Father, “God is light,” and of the Son, “He was the true light.”

And the Spirit is Holy Spirit, and the Son is Son; the Spirit proceeding from the Father and receiving from the Son, “searching the depths of God,” announcing the things of the Son in the world, sanctifying the saints through the Trinity, third in naming (since the Trinity is ⟨the Father⟩ and the Son and the Holy Spirit; for “Go,” he says, “baptize in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”), the seal of grace, the bond of the Trinity, not foreign to the number, not separated from the naming, not alien to the gift; but one God, one faith, one Lord, one grace, one church, one baptism.

For if ⟨we are sealed⟩ into the name of the Father and into the name of the Son and into ⟨the name⟩ of the Holy Spirit, there is one seal of the Trinity; so there is one power of the Godhead in the Trinity. But if the one is God and the others are created and not God, by what reason are the two bound together with the one in the seal of perfection? Were we then sealed into one royal name, that of the Father, while the others are not royal *, but we are still enslaved to elements and created things? And could the name of the Father alone not save, but did he take to himself two other elements that he created, according to the notion of the blasphemers, so that his Godhead might acquire other powers too and be able to save the one sealed by him, and the human being he created receive redemption through forgiveness of sins?

Chapter 9

9.1Holl GCS 25:16

9. Pheu tēs toiautēs lērǭdias, ō tēs toiautēs blasphēmias. pothen hypeisēlthe ton bion allē chalin kainē apistia, mallon de eipoimi kakopistia? cheirōn gar hē kakopistia tēs apistias. hē men gar apistia pistin lambanousa diorthōthēsetai, hē de kakopistia akatorthōtos, dyscherōs sǭzomenē, ei mē ti an ara to chrisma anōthen epiphoitēsę̄.

Alas for such nonsense, O for such blasphemy! From where has another new unbelief crept back into life, or rather, I should say, misbelief? For misbelief is worse than unbelief. Unbelief, by receiving faith, will be set right; but misbelief cannot be set right, and is hardly saved, unless perhaps the anointing comes upon it from above.

But not by merging; for the Father is Father, the Son is Son, the Holy Spirit is Holy Spirit. Yet the Trinity is not estranged from its unity and sameness. The Father is honored as being Father, the Son is honored as being Son, the Holy Spirit is honored as true Spirit and Spirit of God. So the Only-begotten says, “He who honors the Father honors the Son”; for in speaking of the Father you signify the Son and you honor the Son. And “He who honors the Son honors the Father”; for in naming the Son you honor the Father, not saying that Christ is less than the Father.

For if such an attitude is absent even among us human beings, and we do not want our sons to be inferior or diminished relative to the honor of the fathers (for dishonor to the sons reflects on the fathers), how much more would God the Father not want his own Son diminished?
