ὁ δὲ παλαίων τοσούτοις πάθε- “σιν ὅμως τοῦ ζῆν ἀντείχετο, σωτηρίαν τε ἤλπιζε, “καὶ θεραπείας ἐπενόει. διαβὰς γοῦν τὸν Ἰορδάνην τοῖς κατὰ Καλλιρρόην θερμοῖς ἐχρῆτο. ταῦτα δὲ “ ἔξεισι μὲν εἰς τὴν Ἀσφαλτῖτιν λίμνην, ὑπὸ γλυκύ- “τητος δέ ἐστι καὶ πότιμα.

But though he struggled with so many sufferings, he still clung to life, hoped for recovery, and devised treatments. Crossing the Jordan, he used the hot springs at Callirrhoe; these flow out into the Asphalt Lake, but are sweet enough to drink.
