δόξαν δʼ ἐνταῦθα τοῖς “ἰατροῖς ἐλαίῳ θερμῷ πὰν ἀναθάλψαι τὸ σῶμα χα- “ λασθὲν εἰς ἐλαίου πλήρη πύελον ἐκλύει τοὺς ὀφθαλ- “ μοὺς καὶ ὡς τεθνεὼς ἀνέστρεψεν. θορύβου δὲ τῶν θεραπόντων γενομένου πρὸς μὲν τὴν κραυγὴν ἀνή- “ νεγκεν, εἰς δὲ τὸ λοιπὸν ἀπογνοὺς τὴν σωτηρίαν, τοῖς τε στρατιώταις ἀνὰ δραχμὰς πεντήκοντα έκέ- “ λευσε διανεῖμαι, καὶ πολλὰ χρήματα τοῖς ἡγεμόσι καὶ τοῖς φίλοις.

English · Claude translation

When the physicians decided there to warm his whole body with hot oil, he was let down into a tub full of oil, and he fainted and turned up his eyes as if dead. When his attendants raised an uproar, he came round at the cry; but from then on, despairing of recovery, he ordered fifty drachmas each to be distributed to the soldiers, and much money to the officers and his friends.
