καὶ μετὰ βραχέα φησίν “αὖθις δὲ, καὶ γὰρ ἐνδείᾳ τροφῆς καὶ βηχὶ σπασμώδει διε- “ τείνετο, τῶν ἀλγηδόνων ἡττηθεὶς φθάσαι τὴν εἶμαρ- “ ἐπεβάλετο. λαβὼν δὲ μῆλον ᾔτησε καὶ μαχαί- ‘ριον· εἰώθει γὰρ ἀποτέμνων ἐσθίειν· ἔπειτα περια- “ θρήσας, μή τις ὁ κωλύων αὐτὸν εἴη, ἐπῆρε τὴν δεξιὰν “ ὡς πλήξων ἑαυτόν.”

And a little later he says: “Then again, for he was racked by want of food and a convulsive cough, overcome by his pains he tried to anticipate his fate. He asked for an apple and a knife, for he was accustomed to peel it before eating; then, looking round lest there be anyone to stop him, he raised his right hand as though to stab himself.”
