ἀλλὰ γὰρ φθόνῳ καὶ ζήλῳ τοῦ φιλοπονήρου δαίμονος φιλοπαθὴς καὶ φιλοπόνηρος ἐξ αὐτεξουσίου αἱρέσεως γενομένη, ὑπαναχωρήσαντος αὐτῆς τοῦ θείου ὡσὰν ἔρημος προστάτου, εὐάλωτος καὶ εἰς ἐπιβουλὴν εὐχερὴς τοῖς ἐκ μακροῦ διαφθονουμένοις ἀπελήλεγκται, ταῖς τε τῶν ἀοράτων ἐχθρῶν καὶ νοητῶν πολεμίων ἑλεπόλεσι καὶ μηχαναῖς καταβληθεῖσα, πτῶμα ἐξαίσιον καταπέπτωκεν, εἰς ὅσον οὐδʼ ἐπὶ λίθῳ λίθον τῆς ἀρετῆς ἑστῶτα ἐν αὐτῇ διαμεῖναι, ὅλην δὲ διόλου χαμαὶ κεῖσθαι νεκρὰν, τῶν περὶ θεοῦ φυσικῶν ἐννοιῶν πάμπαν ἀπεστερημένην.

English · Claude translation

But through the envy and jealousy of the evil-loving demon, it became, by its own free choice, a lover of passion and of evil; and when the Divine withdrew from it, it was left, as it were, without a protector, and proved easy to capture and ready prey to the plots of those who had long envied it. Overthrown by the siege engines and devices of invisible enemies and spiritual foes, it fell a mighty fall, so that not one stone of virtue remained standing on another in it, but it lay wholly dead on the ground, utterly deprived of its natural ideas about God.
