ταῦτα γὰρ προανακρούεται διατεινόμενος, ὡς ἐν τοῖς ἑξῆς ἐδήλωσε, πρὸς τοὺς οὐκ ἐν σαρκὶ φάσκοντας ἐληλυθέναι τὸν κύριον· διὸ καὶ συνῆψεν ἐπιμελῶς· καὶ ἑωράκαμεν καὶ μαρτυροῦμεν, καὶ ἀπαγγέλλομεν ὑμῖν τὴν ζωὴν τὴν αἰώνιον, ἥτις ἣν πρὸς τὸν πατέρα, καὶ ἐφανερώθη ἡμῖν· ὃ ἑωράκαμεν καὶ ἀκηκόαμεν ἀπαγγέλλομεν καὶ ὑμῖν.

English · Claude translation

For he makes these preliminary statements, contending, as he showed in what follows, against those who say that the Lord has not come in the flesh. Therefore he carefully added: ‘And we have seen and bear witness, and declare to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was manifested to us; that which we have seen and heard we declare to you also.’
