καὶ “ἦν ἡ θέα τῶν αἰκισμῶν ἐνηλλαγμένη, καὶ πολλὴν “τὴν ἐν αὐτῇ κακίαν ἔχουσα. οἶ μὲν γὰρ ὀπίσω τὼ χεῖρε δεθέντες περὶ τὸ ξύλον ἐξηρτῶντο, καὶ μαγγάνοις τισὶ διετείνοντο πᾶν μέλος, εἶθʼ οὕτως διὰ “παντὸς τοῦ σώματος ἐπῆγον ἐκ κελεύσεως οἶ βασα- “νισταὶ, οὐ καθάπερ τοῖς φονεῦσιν ἐπὶ τῶν πλευρῶν “μόνον, ἀλλὰ καὶ τῆς γαστρὸς καὶ κνημῶν καὶ πα- “ρειῶν τοῖς ἀμυντηρίοις ἐκόλαζον· ἕτεροι δὲ ἀπὸ τῆς “στοᾶς μιᾶς χειρὸς ἐξηρτημένοι ᾐωροῦντο, πάσης “ἀλγηδόνος δεινοτέραν τὴν ἀπὸ τῶν ἄρθρων καὶ με- “λῶν τάσιν ἔχοντες· ἄλλοι δὲ πρὸς τοῖς κίοσιν ἀντι- “πρόσωποι ἐδοῦντο, οὐ βεβηκόσι τοῖς ποσὶ, τῷ δὲ “βάρει τοῦ σώματος βιαζομένων μετὰ τάσεως ἀνελ- “κομένων τῶν δεσμῶν.

“And the spectacle of the outrages was varied and full of great wickedness. For some, with their hands bound behind them, were hung on the stake, and every limb was stretched by certain machines; then the torturers, at command, went over the whole body, punishing them with their instruments not only on the sides, as with murderers, but also on the belly, the legs, and the cheeks. Others were hung aloft from the portico by one hand, suffering from the stretching of their joints and limbs a pain more terrible than any other. Others were bound to the pillars face to face, their feet not touching the ground, and the ropes were drawn tight by the weight of the body pulling against them.
