Ἐγώ τε κατʼ ἀρχὰς οὕτω ποθῶν καὶ αὐτὸς συμβαλεῖν τούτων ἑνί, ἐπέδωκα ἐμαυτὸν Στωϊκῷ τινι· καὶ διατρίψας ἱκανὸν μετʼ αὐτοῦ χρόνον, ἐπεὶ οὐδὲν πλέον ἐγίνετό μοι περὶ θεοῦ (οὐδὲ γὰρ αὐτὸς ἠπίστατο, οὐδὲ ἀναγκαίαν ἔλεγε ταύτην εἶναι τὴν μάθησιν), τούτου μὲν ἀπηλλάγην, ἐπʼ ἄλλον δὲ ἦκα, Περιπατητικὸν καλούμενον, δριμύν, ὡς ᾤετο. Καί μου ἀνασχόμενος οὗτος τὰς πρώτας ἡμέρας ἠξίου με ἔπειτα μισθὸν ὁρίσαι, ὡς μὴ ἀνωφελὴς ἡ συνουσία γίνοιτο ἡμῖν. Καὶ αὐτὸν ἐγὼ διὰ ταύτην τὴν αἰτίαν κατέλιπον, μηδὲ φιλόσοφον οἰηθεὶς ὅλως.

English · Claude translation

At first, wishing myself too to meet one of these, I gave myself to a certain Stoic; and after spending a good deal of time with him, when I gained nothing more about God (for he did not know himself, and said this knowledge was not necessary), I left him and went to another, called a Peripatetic, shrewd, as he thought. And this man, after putting up with me for the first few days, asked me to set a fee, so that our association might not be unprofitable to us. And I left him too for this reason, thinking him no philosopher at all.
