Οὐ γὰρ ὡς ὄντων θεῶν ταῦτα λέγεται, ἀλλʼ ὡς τοῦ λόγου διδάσκοντος ἡμᾶς ὅτι τῶν νομιζομένων θεῶν καὶ κυρίων ὁ τῷ ὄντι θεός, ὁ τὰ πάντα ποιήσας, κύριος μόνος ἐστίν. Ἵνα γὰρ καὶ τοῦτο ἐλέγξῃ τὸ ἅγιον πνεῦμα, διὰ τοῦ ἁγίου Δαυῒδ εἶπεν· Οἱ θεοὶ τῶν ἐθνῶν, νομιζόμενοι θεοί, εἴδωλα δαιμονίων εἰσίν, ἀλλʼ οὐ θεοί. Καὶ ἐπάγει κατάραν τοῖς ποιοῦσιν αὐτὰ καὶ προσκυνοῦσι.

English · Claude translation

“For these things are not said as though they were gods, but because the word teaches us that the true God, who made all things, is alone Lord over those who are thought to be gods and lords. For so that the Holy Spirit might also refute this, it said through holy David: ‘The gods of the nations, thought to be gods, are idols of demons, and not gods.’ And it brings a curse on those who make them and worship them.”
