Chapter 22
22PL 52:863b–863 b
Nam sicut a nomine Dei Patris homines Dei appellantur, ut Helias homo Dei dictus est, et Moyses homo Dei, ut Тimotheus homo Dei a Paulo appellatus est, sic a Christo Christiani nuncupantur; sic etiam ab Spiritu spirituales appellantur. Amen.
No one is unaware of this: that nothing can be added to or taken from the divine majesty by human supplications: but each one, according to the purpose of his will, either gains glory for himself by faithfully venerating, or confusion by obstinately resisting. For it is certain that contention and pride produce damnation; honour awaits the fruit of devotion. Why, then, should the faithful not honour the Trinity wholly, to which they trust that they belong, in whose name they glory that they were reborn, by whose title they glory that they are named? For as people are called men of God from the name of God the Father, as Elijah was called a man of God, and Moses a man of God, as Timothy was called a man of God by Paul, so they are called Christians from Christ; so too they are called spiritual from the Spirit. If, then, you are called a man of God and are not a Christian, you are nothing. Likewise, if you are called a Christian and are not spiritual, do not trust enough in your salvation. Let there be in us, then, according to the Saviour’s baptism, one confession, one faith in the whole Trinity, one devotion of piety: let us not, in the manner of the pagans, imagine differences of powers, nor suspect a creature in the Trinity. But neither let us fall under the stumbling of the Jews, who deny the Son of God and do not adore the Spirit; but rather, adoring and magnifying the perfect Trinity, let us hold to our conscience as we say with our mouth in the mysteries: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts.” And that “one holy,” namely the Spirit; “one God, Jesus Christ, in the glory of God the Father”; one omnipotence, because one is also the worship of the Trinity. And henceforth, pursuing peace and love, let us always abound in good works: and let us hear from the Apostle, as the Corinthians heard in the first letter: “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” Amen.

Notes and citation
Summary: Nicetas concludes that Christians, named from the Father, the Son and the Spirit, must honour the whole Trinity in one faith, as they sing “Holy, holy, holy” in the liturgy.
- Allusions and quotations: 1 Kgs 17:18 (Elijah), Deut 33:1 (Moses), 1 Tim 6:11 (Timothy); Isa 6:3 (the Sanctus of the eucharistic liturgy); the liturgical response “one holy … one Lord Jesus Christ, in the glory of God the Father” (here “one God”; compare Phil 2:11); 2 Cor 13:14 (the text says “in the first letter”; the verse is in the second). The polemic against Jews and pagans is Nicetas’s, translated as written. Many OCR slips were corrected.
